Lilly's Last Stand
Lilly the goat has had a rough month. We've been battling severe mastitis since the beginning of March. The lab tests finally confirmed pseudomonas, an extremely antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
Just got back from the vet. He believes the only other option is surgery. But even that option looks bleak -- she may not survive the anesthesia, and if she does she may not survive the surgery. Her chances post-surgery is equally dicey. Do I even want to put her through that?
So, as a last ditch effort (and after plenty of research) I'm going to try flushing her udder with tea tree essential oil. Some small studies have shown it to be effective against pseudomonas. A woman I have had the privilege of knowing sells extremely high quality tea tree oil. Although she's teaching a class today, she agreed to take a quick break so I could pick up the oil this afternoon.
I'm afraid it may be too little, too late. Lilly stopped eating this morning. She's a great little goat. We don't want to lose her.
So, on with the tea tree oil. After that, I'll try to remember that it's no longer in my hands. We'll hope that it's enough.
