Quick and Simple Home-Baked Bread

I have been searching for the perfect bread recipe for a long time.  I'm kind of picky, I guess.  The resulting bread can't be too dense, too salty, too sweet, and it has to be really easy to make.

So far, this one comes as close to perfect as I have found.  I altered it a bit to fit better fit my liking.  It makes a really soft, pliable dough that rises well and bakes into two soft, yummy loaves.

And, as far as bread-making goes, it's a relatively simple recipe that you can churn out fairly quickly.  We made it into rolls for Easter dinner at my in-laws, and they seemed to be a hit.

You can also substitute whole wheat flour for 1/2 of the while flour in this recipe, and it makes a great loaf of wheat bread too.

Yummy Bread Recipe

2 1/2 cups very warm water
4 1/2 teaspoons dry yeast (or two packets)
1 tablespoon sugar

Add these three ingredients and mix lightly.  Let set for 5 to 10 minutes, until the yeast is bubbling and foaming in the water.  Next, stir in:

1/3 cup vegetable oil
2 teaspoons salt
1/2 cup milk
6 cups flour

Mix well and turn out onto a floured board or counter top.  Knead for 10 to 15 minutes, adding 1-3 cups additional flour.  The dough should be smooth and pliable.

Place in an oiled bowl and let proof for 1 1/2 to 3 hours, until the dough doubles in size.  Punch down and lightly knead.  Form into two loaves or 48 rolls.  Place in oiled baking pan and let rise until doubled (about 30 minutes to 1 hour.)

Bake in a 350 degree oven for approximately 45 minutes (35 minutes for rolls) or until top is golden brown.  Brush top with butter, if desired.

I like to eat mine warm, right out of the oven.  Yum!
