Day 352: Loving Homesteading Again

Just two days after my last post, the kids and I harvested about 15 lbs. of produce from the garden. Prior to this I was super frustrated, feeling overworked, and with not much to show for it. The universe only pushes you so far before giving again.

With my one year mark fast approaching, I've come to terms with the fact that I didn't get nearly as far into my self-sufficient lifestyle as I though I would. Last year at this time I had dreams of our property providing all the food we needed, baking bread daily from flour we traded for fresh eggs, and generally saving more money and living a healthier lifestyle.

If only I knew then what I know know.

So we're not even close to self-reliance. But we are closer than we were before. This year I've expanded the garden, bought two dairy goats who are going out in the next weeks to be bred, and solidified in my mind why I undertook this project in the first place.

And today, while trimming the hooves of an angry goat held on my husband's lap, while shoveling manure while the horses munched nearby, while watching chickens eyeball red, ripe tomatoes through a fence they could not penetrate, I felt content with what I had accomplished and happy.

In short, I'm loving homesteading again.
