Day 205: Ever Closer Yet Still Far Away

Our garden has been supplying much more of our food. It's so exciting to prepare an entire meal that has come directly from our land.

But still find myself ever reliant on the grocery store, even when I don't have to be. For example, why do I feel the need to buy a ten pound bag of carrots when I have an entire bed of them just begging to be picked? I don't know. All I do know is I just bought another bag last week.

I also have a bag of waffles in the freezer, ones that I made from scratch and froze for quick breakfasts for the kids. Next to them is two boxes of store-bought waffles. Guess which ones get chosen?

Even I pulled out the store-bought waffle box this morning, passing over my lovingly made home-baked ones (they were cinnamon flavored, I caved.) I say cinnamon flavored because there is actually no real cinnamon in the waffles.

In fact, in bold letters it states on the box "ARTIFICIALLY FLAVORED." When I saw that, I thought "yuck." But popped them in the toaster and ate them anyway.

In my pantry there are potato chips, boxed noodles, cup-of-soup, and about a ton of Easter candy. Obviously my dedication to eating only natural foods has wavered a wee bit.

It would be easy to blame the kids for begging for the candy, or my husband for bringing home frozen convenience foods every time he goes to the grocery store, but the choice is squarely mine.

Sometimes I get frustrated with myself, as I tend to be an all-or-nothing type of person. I have to remind myself that it's a process of life change that doesn't have to be black-and-white, good or bad.

Besides, with spring finally here and the promise of new veggies to be planted, my dedication to my garden is being revived.
