Day 196: Help Out a Fab Nor Cal Non-Profit

It's very rare that I vote online for any purpose; I never recruit others to do it either. So I'm stepping out of my comfort zone today and doing both.

The D.O.V.E.S. Guidance Program is a non-profit based in Lodi. D.O.V.E.S.
teaches horsemanship to at-risk youth. Many of their horses are rescues, so the program is helping both the kids and horses.

I could have been considered an at-risk youth myself, and horses play a huge part in my life, so the premise of this program is dear to my heart. In fact, years ago I wanted to start a program exactly like this one. Ultimately, I discovered that my life's path was meant to take a different direction (one that I'm equally passionate about!) but a massive soft spot has developed for D.O.V.E.

I've personally seen the change horses can bring to the lives of those who become involved with them. Just watching my children interact with our herd, I see them learning responsibility, kindness, confidence, patience, determination, fearlessness, communication. These are lessons I, too, continue to learn from these creatures.

S. teaches kids who desperately need to learn these lessons, and they do it all without charging the families they help. So D.O.V.E.S. is hoping to get a grant from the Pepsi Refresh Project. Just think what good they could do with $250,000!

One thing on their wish list is an indoor arena. City slickers won't realize what a fabulous thing an indoor arena can be. It means riding year-round, even when it's raining or the ground is slick with mud. For D.O.V.E
S., it would mean not having to close their doors for 3-4 months a year.

D.O.V.E.S. needs your help! They're competing against other groups, and only the top two will receive the grant money. Go to and vote for D.O.V.E.S. You can vote every day until April 30. I am.

Here's hoping we can help out a local good cause!
