Day 29: Homemade Hot Chocolate

My kids absolutely love hot chocolate. And, lets be honest, when the evenings are cool so do I.

Truly homemade hot chocolate, made by slowly melting chocolate into milk, is a delicious treat when you have the time to make it.
We rarely have time to make that treat, though, and instant powder allows the kids to make their own whenever the mood strikes them.

But those little instant packets are incredibly expensive, plus they're loaded with sugar and hydrogenated oils.
Instead, we always make up a large batch of homemade cocoa mix. It's super inexpensive to make.

The base starts with powdered milk, which I used to abhor. Turns out, there are huge differences in taste between brands. Shop around to find one that suits your taste.

Hot Chocolate Mix
5 cups powdered milk
1 cup powdered cocoa
1 cup powdered coffee creamer (try a flavored option, if you'd like)
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 cup brown sugar (optional, if you prefer a sweeter flavor)
1 cup mini marshmallows (optional)

In a large bowl, mix together all ingredients until well incorporated. Place in an airtight container. Use approximately 3 tablespoons, give or take, per 8 oz. hot water.
